Recently, Deaf Basketball Victoria ran a junior clinic in conjunction with a 3 on 3 competition. This event was held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Sunday the 8th of November where a number of players and supported became involved. All the participants in the junior clinic were able to further their skills through explanation by coach and player, Sam Quinn. The children then practiced their skills on the court with Sam’s supervision. Most of the children then stayed on to compete in a series of games during the 3 on 3 competition. Positive feedback was offered by most parents and the children seemed excited about the day.
Unfortunately only 2 women’s teams were entered into the competition which meant they played best of 3 with “Hillsider’s” winning the women division. The men’s competition however was more challenging with 4 teams registered with “3 and a half men” winning the medal. A fair competition was played smoothly by all competitors with volunteer referees and other supporters there on the day to help out and watch. DBV are hoping to set up a similar event next year.

The Australian women’s Deaf Basketball team the Geckos set off for a journey of a life time and returned having achieved many personal and team goals. Being part of the Australian Deaflympic team was new for 7 out of the 9 players with 5 having played in an international tournament before. The level of competition was challenging however the geckos maintained enthusiasm and put up a strong fight against all other teams. Playing against the top teams in the world meant the Geckos had to concentrate on why they were there and really focus on bringing out their best game. Lead by an awesome coaching team, officials and plenty of close supporters, all the Geckos were very proud of what they achieved during the 7 games.
